15th annual Teach-In for Pinellas County Schools November 19, 2008

The15th annual Progress Energy Great American Teach-In Wednesday, Nov. 19, in Pinellas County Schools, is the contribution of the thousands of volunteers who visit the schools that day to share a piece of their lives with students.
Progress Energy Florida has sponsored the Teach-In in Pinellas since the inaugural year, providing printed materials, promotional activities and enthusiastic support.  The Teach-In introduces students to career options they might never have considered, hobbies they might never have discovered and activities they might never have experienced. Students learn from professionals, trades people, parents, community members and other students. The annual event benefits the students and the volunteers alike.

In addition to elementary, middle and high schools, there also are dropout-prevention programs, exceptional education schools and an alternative school that would love to have more speakers. Prospective participants unable to attend during traditional school hours might consider the technical education centers or community schools.

Brochures with registration forms are available in all schools and at the administration building in Largo. Online is possible by visiting www.pcsb.org  Registration forms may be returned to any Pinellas County public school or mailed to Kay Masters, Pinellas County Schools, P.O. Box 2942, Largo, FL 33779-2942. The registration deadline is Nov. 12.

Those wishing more information may call the Teach-In coordinator at any public school or Kay Masters, 588-6000, ext. 1951, or e-mail mastersk@pcsb.org.

Just the Facts

The LiveFree! Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Pinellas County and Operation PAR Pinellas Juvenile Assessment Center staff are facilitating a Last Drink Survey with youth who are admitted at the Pinellas Juvenile Assessment Center. The surveys are being conducted from 3:00 to 11:00 pm Monday-Thursday and 7:00 am to 3:00 pm Sunday-Saturday.  The purpose of the Last Drink Survey is to bridge existing gaps in data collection and expand LiveFree!’s knowledge of how youth are gaining access to alcohol along with the correlation between alcohol and youth related crimes.  With data collected, coalition and community members will work together to discover avenues to reduce youth crime influenced by alcohol.  Below are results from two of the questions from the survey:

Question: Where was the last place you had or purchased a drink?
type of offense
Question: Has someone 21 or older ever purchased alcohol for you?
